Widow’s Mites, also known as Leptons or Pruta, were the smallest known denomination in ancient Jewish currency. These were regular coins from the Maccabees to the time of Herod, but they became famous worldwide with their mention in the New Testament. The word Mite was not what they were called in Jerusalem at the time of Jesus, but the name was included later in some of the earlier English versions of The Bible.
And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.These tiny coins always come as a pair and feature a yoke on one side and a spoked wheel on the reverse. Because this coin is a reproduction of historical coinage, we have added text between the spokes of the wheel that roughly translates to "reproduction" in ancient Hebrew.—Luke 21:1-4

Shire Post Mint coins are struck one at a time in West Fork, Arkansas, USA using solid metals, hand-engraved designs, antique machinery and traditional coining techniques. For antiqued coins, the coloring/patina process is done by hand, and it is both an art and a science so coins will vary slightly. Our unique packaging includes a description of each coin and translations if applicable.
